CHRISTMAS PAST
11

My first memories of Christmas were in ~he Towaoc Boarding
School. The night be~ore Christmas Eve all of us little children,
Frances Buck, Joe Weaver, myself and others sneaked out of our rooms
to peek at the big girls assigned to wrap the presents and fill the
stockings. The next night there weuld be a program with singing of
carols. Then, when we heard bells jingi ing in the hall we got so
exc.i ted we could not sit still, becaus,~ we ~ w who was coming .
Santa ran into the hall with his pack t ull • • pr esents . Every
year the girls got a doll and the boy~ got a ball or some other
toy.11
Eva Cook

nr grew up in Norwood near London, England. Sometimes on
Christmas morning we receive~ an apple and nuts, sometimes not.
Toys were OUL of the question. Usually we had Christmas pudding
and a good dinner. We went caroling, sometimes in bitterly cold.
weather. So~e of the people opened their door~ to listen and
dropped pennj_es into our ha ts. 11

"My family was moving to south._. Texa,s in De.c ember .
The day
bef ore Christmas ·we camped near the~ tockyartls of a small town .
Dad went sh6pping a nd returned with'"toys f e r the youngest chil dren
a1:d with sweatE!:-rs for my two older -Sisters and myself. I was at
the age when I was almost too old f or toys, but wished I wern 1 t. ·
The sweaters were very beautiful, bu£ Dad could sense I was a little
disappointed. A while later he returned with, a doll for me. 11

"I was the youngest child in my family growing up on the ranch
east of Ignacio. Santa always came to our house the night before
Christmas while I was asleep~ I woke up before dawn, got my parents
up and ran in to the fireplace to see what was in my stocking, then
to the tree for a present. My parents knew I was crazy about trains.
My favorite present was a wind-up train. Another time I got a little
steam engine with a lead flywheel which burned alcohol. It worked
great until one day I put in too much alcohol ·and melted the flywheel
right off of it. 11

"I can still hear my Dad saying ; 1 Go to bed children; so Santa Claus
can come.• Then the next morning he came into our room and said,'l~ke
up Children. I think Santa Claus has been here.' We got up right then
and ran in to the tree and tore into the presents.rt

'Dad always sent us to bed real early on Christmas Eve so Sa.nta.
could come . The next morning we found apples and -oranges, but no
presents. But we didn't know the difference, so·we were happy with
what
got. ' 1

,;I was one of 10 children growing up on a ranch near Rogers,

Arkans!as. Every year my parents bought each of us a new suit of
clothe:s and one or two special toys for Christmas. With that many
peopl~ in a house it was impossible to hide the toys en the pla~e,
so my Dad left them at the neighbors very secretively until Christmas Eve. Some years he was so quiet about it we wondered whether
we were going to get anything. One morning when I woke up very early
to check the Christmas tree, I found the decorations afire. Fortunately
we were able to wake everyone up and put out the fire before it destroyed
the house. 11

1 .was a very 'bad girl one year. !1y father, who 01'med. a book and
stationery store in Durango, brought a catalog to my !:'!.other who picked
the toys to order for us children. I looked in the catalog to see
what mother had ordered for us. There were her neat check:narks beside
certain items. Then a brilliant a.,,~d naughty idea came to ~e. I ~ade
checknarks just as neat as my mother 1 s beside several expensive toys
and waited to see what would happen. When the toys ar!'ived, tiy nother
was confounded. Dad put theIL- in the store to see if they woulci sell,
but they were too expensive for most people to buy. One was a little
tea table with.4 tiny chairs. Another was a miniature electric range
which really cooked. When they didn't sell, Dad brought them ho~e to
:u;,e. Don I t think I didn't enjoy them! 11

I was 5 years old and wanted a new doll badly. My mother bought
a china head, made a body for it and sewed a beautiful blue dress. 1
When mother sent me to bed, the doll was already lying on my pillow~
